Forschungsinstitut für Bergbaufolgelandschaften e.V. (FIB)

The research institute for mining aftermath landscapes e.V., founded in 1992 in Finsterwalde, deals with landscapes damaged by raw material extraction, particularly in the Lusatian lignite mining area.
To this end, the institute develops remediation solutions with thematic focuses on agricultural and forestry recultivation, water ecology, as well as landscape development and nature conservation. In addition, adaptation strategies for other habitats or ecosystems that are impaired in their function are being developed. This includes, for example, the amelioration and use of marginal soils for the cultivation of renewable raw materials or the impacts of climate change on land use and water management.
